I’m a Los Angeles native who discovered NYC in the late nineties and never looked back. Living here is not always easy, but I believe that I would never have developed my sense of light and shadow if I had stayed home, or moved somewhere else. I love the grittiness of the city, especially Brooklyn, where I currently live.
It was my father who introduced me to the world of still photographs. He taught me how to blend the strict technical rules of aperture, shutter speed and depth of field and combine them with light and shadow. My mother introduced me to macro photography. We would go to the park on her days off and look at insects, plant life and everything else too tiny to see with the naked eye. Both of them taught me to see an incredibly beautiful world that most of us take for granted.
My philosophy towards cinematography is easy- keep it simple and strong. That means knowing when to use every source, flag and stand on the truck, and knowing when to pull back, light a candle, and let the actors do their thing.
Are you still reading this? Christ. If you’ve made it this far, I might as well tell you the truth. All of the above is true. All of it. But it’s also so bullshit- written as if to suggest I was born at Disneyland, where life is just, you know, peachy, when you and I know the real truth. Anyway, here’s the best and only way I know how to sum this up; 97% of our waking and dreaming hours are spent struggling to make art. The other 3% is time spent actually doing it.
I live for the 3%.
